Arcades Shopping Centre, Ashton-under-Lyne
Ashton-under-Lyne has a primary catchment area of 193,000 (PROMIS). The town benefits from a vibrant mix of retailers, across the fashion and general retail spectrum. It is also a popular shopping destination due to its well-known indoor and outdoor markets. IKEA has a major presence close to the town centre. The Arcades Shopping Centre is regarded as the prime retail location in the town, strategically located between the bus and Metrolink stations and the rest of the town centre (Market Square, Warrington Street and Ladysmith Shopping Centre).
The Arcades is the only covered centre in the town. Key occupiers include Next, New Look, JD Sports, Superdrug, WH Smith, H Samuel, Barclays and Warren James. The centre benefits from a 500 space rooftop car park with access directly into the shopping centre.
Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council in partnership with Tameside College, has formed Vision Tameside (www.visiontameside. com), which has brought about the redevelopment of Tameside College and the creation of new college facilities in the town centre. Adding to the town's vibrancy, these include the new Clarendon Sixth Form College on Camp Street and a major new combined Council HQ & Tameside College building (Advanced Skills Centre) immediately next to the centre in the main square.
